Abstract

This paper discusses the most significant results of the noninvasive technical analyses which were carried out in 2015 on the Fitzwilliam Book of Hours. Painted c.1510–1520 probably in Bruges, this volume showcases the final and most exuberant phase of Flemish manuscript illumination. It also represents the highest point in the development of the Book of Hours, the quintessential text for private devotion and a cornerstone of the European book trade well before c.1500.
