Abstract

Dordzhi talks about a magical tree that keeps evil at bay:This tree is the same height as a man. It has magical powers to fend off evil. Hence Kalmyks make the handle of their whips from this tree. Once my friend’s younger brother had a car accident, but came out unharmed. A fortune teller told him later that he was saved by a tree that was inside the car, which turned out to be a piece of the tyavlgn tree. Another friend of mine complained to me that at night he was followed by a shadow that strangled him. To protect himself, he began to keep an axe and a knife by his side when sleeping. I gave him a branch of the tyavlgn tree. The next day he said to me that the shadow still followed him but did not approach his bed. Before cutting a branch, one needs to offer that tree white and red coins in exchange.
