Abstract
Abstract: Sport is affected by many forms of luck. One significant form of luck is the socioeconomic resource available to a competitor, which can significantly and unfairly affect her success. Another is what Sigmund Loland calls “stable inequalities”: characteristics of an athlete that she can do little to change. These also significantly affect success. However, not all stable inequalities should be treated equally: some bring greater and more unfair advantage than others. Sex is a stable inequality of such significance for fair competition that it should be used as a basis for classification in many sporting contexts; stable inequalities within a sex category are often less important for fairness.
