This article refutes official affirmations by the Egyptian army that it participated in the First World War. It argues instead that the nearly 100,000 Egyptians who participated in the war were members of the Egyptian Labour Corps. These men, the article argues, were peasants and not soldiers, and, as such, they were civilians and not members of the Egyptian army.
