Abstract

Most scientific and almost all chemical data is lost before publication. This 10 minute invited talk gives bullet points and slogans urging scientists to archive data at source and ends with some actions that are free and simple

Description

INVITED PRESENTATION TO JISC (JOINT INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS COMMITTEE, UK) AT ANNUAL MEETING 2005-04-12 IN SESSION ON OPEN ACCESS, CHAIR FRED FRIEND

The following cover note was sent to the organizer:

I have a particular axe to grind - the loss of scientific data in current scientific publishing. My theme could be summarised by "Open Access to published Scientific data". Open Access does not, IMO, guarantee Open reuse of the scientific data within an article. The author has donated their data to the publisher who frequently restricts the use, even in "Open Access" journals. This point is almost entirely missed or misunderstood by the protagonists or Open Access, some of whom maintain that allowing photons to reach a human retina is complete Open Access. For me it has to be the complete BOAI or similar declaration. I have seen few publishers who mention BOAI and personally I have had great difficulty in getting any response from any of them on this topic.

NOTE I HATE POWERPOINT AND APLOGIZE FOR DEPOSITING IT BUT IT WAS MANDATORY
