CamRAD Rock-Art Images

Permanent URI for this collection

We do not know how much rock-art lies within the Aconcagua Valley. Work on its analysis is in its early stages and archaeologists and anthropologists have yet to agree on a complete form of categorization. As more rock-art is uncovered no doubt the classification system will be refined further.

Paidahuen, which is the current focus of CamRAD, today sits within the San Esteban vineyard. It is a free-standing ridge some 900 m. high lying across the valley of the Aconcagua as it enters the plain around the city of Los Andes. The hill dominates the immediate landscape of the valley floor and the pre-Hispanic inhabitants chose to mark at least ninety of the rocks on the site.
