Description

There are two typewritten captions pasted on the reverse of the photograph. The first caption reads: 'Nigeria has in hand development plans involving the expenditure of UKP40,000,000 during the next 11 years. It is essential that the government should have at its disposal first class doctors, engineers, surveyors, agriculture, forestry and voluntary officers and teachers - and, that so many as possible should be Africans. The work of the 13-year-old Higher College at Yaba [it was founded in 1934] is therefore more important than ever. The College entrance examination is of a considerably higher standard than the English School Certificate. Of those who pass, approximately one third win scholarships; full fees are UKP50 per annum but students who cannot afford the full amount are accepted at a reduced rate of UKP15 per annum. In addition there is an arrangement whereby in special cases fees may be paid after the student has completed his training and obtained employment. The College offers courses in Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Forestry, Survey, Veterinary, and Teaching'. The second caption reads: 'DW.3911. Picture shows:- A corner of the dormitory used by the junior boys. Each boy is issued with blankets and a mosquito net'. British Official Photograph, Crown Copyright.
