Description

There are two captions pasted on the reverse of the photograph. The first caption reads: 'Gold Coast Government's School for Senior Boys (Tamale, Northern Territories). The Gold Coast Government believes in rooting its education in the life of the people. Key institutions in the education system of the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast are at Tamale and include a senior boarding school for boys and a training college for teachers. The people of the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast are first and foremost farmers, so an important post is that of a manger of the school and college farms. The manager works under direction of both Education and Agricultural Officers and aims at improving the farming of his countrymen e.g. showing how stock and crops improve in the mixed farming system. Hand in hand with Northern Territories farming go rural crafts. At the School and College Crafts Centre Senior school pupils and college students learn how these can be improved and developed in the villages to which they will return for their life's work'. The second caption reads: 'DW.2664. Picture shows:- Wumbei Bimbila, son of the chief of Bimbila, is already a skilled mason'. Photograph taken circa 1945. British Official Photograph, Crown Copyright.
