Hope (1860-1908), 7th Earl of Hopetoun and first Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia until 1902. The reference to Canada's assistance is probably the boring machine itself. A machine known as the 'Canadian Pole Tool' became generally regarded as the most efficient borer on deep wells and was used extensively, first at Thurrulgoonia when the normal drills had problems with the depth.
