Description
141 x 199 mm. A head and shoulders portrait of this young Maori girl wearing a checked shirt and leaning against a hut. This picture is a cropped enlargement of a full length portrait of the girl taken on the 12th May 1885. Burton took several pictures of this girl '...who after some little coquetry, was induced to become a subject for the camera... when she found that the 'taipo' (devil) did her no harm, she was ready to be posed to any extent, till in fact, the available stock of plates ran out' (Burton quoted in: Main, William (1976), 'Maori in focus'. Wellington: Millwood Press).
