Abstract

A street scene with buildings and figures.

Description

[top left, vertical orientation] sent to Mr Hd. (Mr) by Parry in Novr/33 1833.11.

Drawing. The foreground depicts rather uneven waste ground. On the left there is an unmounted cannon barrel in front of a rough archway; to the right of this stands a building with two windows flanking a narrow doorway and with a fixed awning on projecting timber roof joists. Beneath and beyond this we see about eight human figures, three of whom are closer to the viewer, and one of whom is possibly seated. In the midground behind these figures and at the back edge of waste ground, there is a building (a storehouse?) with a rough sidewall, and a roof which is mainly flat, sloping only at the right-hand end. Behind this building, in the centre midground, a substantial three-storey building, with a mainly flat roof which slopes only at the left-hand end, stands on the left side of a street which recedes into the background. Three figures are shown at the entrance to this street, partly obscuring the ground floor of the three-storey building. This has four windows facing the street on the top storey, possibly a balcony fronting the middle storey, and a ground floor frontage indistinctly depicted. Other tall buildings are visible further behind to the left, possibly topped with stone balustrades; and to the right other less dictinctly depicted tall buildings terminate the line of sight behind the three figures. In the midground on the right-hand side of the street, an oblong building with no windows is shown, to whose right a rough wall about two storeys high runs from the centre right to the right of the picture; before these structures three pairs of figures walk at different distances from viewer beside a low stepped wall stretching from the right centre of the midground towards the right foreground. Behind the oblong building and rough wall, a three(?)-storey flat-roofed building slightly taller than that on the left-hand side of the street can be seen; it has five windows on the visible upper storey facing the viewer. Two other tall buildings outlined behind and to the right of this lead to an indistinct horizon line in the right background. The sun is shining from behind and somewhat to the right of Martens' vantage point.
