Abstract

A townscape with some human figures and vegetation, and annotated with colouring instructions.

Description

Drawing. In the right foreground, a figure possibly carrying a bag walks on rough ground rising from street level from the centre to the right. Atop the highest part of the rough grows a large phormium, yucca or cordyline-like plant with flower-spikes 4--5m high, in front of a two-storey oblong building with three round-topped openings on the ground floor facing the street. The leftmost of these openings may be an arched doorway. On the right-hand side of the street, behind and to the left of the oblong building, stands a church, whose street facade has a central arched entrance below a circular window, above which curved stonework runs between corner pinnacles; a central wide triangular pinnacle seems to be topped with a Cross. This building is set back within a walled enclosure from the street, which rises in the centre to centre left of the picture from the midground towards the background horizon, with an impression of two figures in the distance; one of the figures is on horseback, seen side-on, and approaching a flat roofed building on the right-hand side of the street at the far end of the walled enclosure. This building has three lower-storey windows facing the street, and an elaborate pinnacle, possibly a statuette, on its far front corner. On the opposite side of the street two-storey buildings seen in acute profile are indicated, receding to indistinctness in the distance. The left foreground in front of the nearest building is occupied by rubble or other rough ground. In the left midground beside the two-storey building in the middle distance, we see two figures side-on on horseback, one facing left in front of other, who is facing right, and whose horse is feeding from the ground. The sky is blank, and the sun is shining from behind and to the left of Martens' vantage point. There are annotations in the top against the sky with lines pointing down to the relevant structures: "brick walls." (over the wall to the front left of the church facade; this wall is some 4m high, on a broad curve with dooorways in it); "white & red bands." (over the church facade itself); "white" (over the substantial flat-roofed building to the right of the church).
