Abstract

A rocky coastal inlet scene.

Description

Drawing; similar to watercolour engraved by Bull S as `Upper part of Port Desire inlet' reproduced facing Narrative 2: 316.

The location is very similar to that of 28r, Martens' vantage point possibly being close to the right-hand edge of the principal islet in 28r, its right-hand face forming the left-hand edge of the picture. The second islet of 28r appears here in the centre of the picture, with a more distant hilly horizon line behind it. On the right, a rocky outcrop rises vertically to a jagged but horizontal surface in the top right-hand corner of the picture. In front of this outcrop there is a lower rock with a tall overhanging slab with a relatively smooth right-hand surface; these right-hand features cast dark shadows onto the water and vegetation at their base. The sun is shining from behind Martens' vantage point, and appears to be high in the sky. In the right foreground, there is a small beachy area and the impression of a clump of vegetation, including some seagrasses. The water appears calm.
