Across the materials spectrum, it is widely known that the presence of both point and extended defects can have a dramatic impact on properties. Defects are however normally associated with disorder, and here we explore the interplay between these two phenomena in the metal-organic framework (MOF) family. Examples of cation and anion substitution in both open framework, and dense MOFs are considered, whilst we also discuss the application of techniques designed to probe the extent to which such defects are related to one another.
