If measurements or estimates of these are lost due to multiple simultaneous sensor failures, the pilot must revert to an alternative control law, or, in the ultimate case, directly command control surface positions. This work develops a robust backup load-factor tracking control law, that does not depend on these parameters, based on application of theory from robust MPC and $H_2$ optimal control. Firstly, the methods are applied with loss only of airdata, and subsequently also with loss of mass and CoG estimates. Local linear analysis indicates satisfactory performance over a wide range of operating points. To keep the aircraft within an acceptable operating region, an outer protection loop is implemented using an override approach, based on ground speed, a model of the trim angle of attack and variation of load factor with respect to angle of attack, and $\textit{a priori}$ bounds on the wind speed. Finally, the resulting control laws are demonstrated on the nonlinear RECONFIGURE benchmark, which is derived from an Airbus high fidelity, industrially-validated simulator. dc.description.sponsorship European Union Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007- 2013 (Grant ID: 314 544, project “RECONFIGURE”) dc.language English en dc.language.iso en en dc.publisher Elsevier dc.title A longitudinal flight control law to accommodate sensor loss in the RECONFIGURE benchmark en dc.type Article prism.endingPage 223 prism.publicationDate 2016 en prism.publicationName Annual Reviews in Control en prism.startingPage 212 prism.volume 42 en dc.identifier.doi 10.17863/CAM.5917 dc.identifier.doi 10.17863/CAM.5917 dc.identifier.doi 10.17863/CAM.5917 dc.identifier.doi 10.17863/CAM.5917 dc.identifier.doi 10.17863/CAM.5917 dcterms.dateAccepted 2016-06-01 en rioxxterms.versionofrecord 10.1016/j.arcontrol.2016.07.001 en rioxxterms.version AM en rioxxterms.licenseref.uri http://www.rioxx.net/licenses/all-rights-reserved en rioxxterms.licenseref.startdate 2016-01-01 en dc.contributor.orcid Maciejowski, Jan [0000-0001-8281-8364] dc.contributor.orcid Hartley, Edward [0000-0001-5491-229X] rioxxterms.type Journal Article/Review en pubs.funder-project-id EC FP7 CP (314544) rioxxterms.freetoread.startdate 2017-08-13
