Alena was born in Sarpinskiy rayon in Kalmykia. Having lost her mother when she was a young girl, Alena was brought up by her father. She met her future husband in Siberia when the Kalmyks were sent into exile there. Two of her oldest children died in Siberia, although the other four who were born later in Kalmykia survived.
