Abstract

Sanal has three children and six grandchildren. He talks about his clan, the Baga-Chonos, which consists of eight arvns or sub-clans. Sanal himself belongs to the Kharnud arvn. He knows his family history nine generations before him and presents us his family's genealogical tree. When in the 1990s the President of Kalmykia, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, issued a decree to 'passportize' (register) all Kalmyk clans, Sanal's clan counted 1230 male members. Sanal displays us the passport of the Baga-Chonos clan which bears the clan's stamp, an arrowhead.
