Abstract
Sir Patrick Bateson, who died on 1 August at the age of 79, made
great strides in the field of ethology— the biological basis of animal behavior. He also contributed to neuroscience, theoretical biology, scientific methodology, and psychology, forging new links between these disciplines. A force in science and education, he combined intellectual
brilliance and personal charm with a sense of humor that could by turns
be incisive, mischievous, and self-deprecating.
