Abstract

This special issue shows what distinctive contributions historians can make to the study of social mobility in modern Britain, with their strengths in micro analysis, in assembling a dense web of cause and effect, and in taking an equal interest in experience and representation. There remain significant opportunities for historians and sociologists to combine their strengths in this enterprise.
