Abstract
The site Casas del Turuñuelo in south-western Spain opens a unique window into textile production and consumption in Iron Age Iberia and, more broadly, into sacrificial economy in ancient Europe. The site is a country-estate that was intentionally set on fire after a banquet and a sacrifice of over 50 horses, cows, and pigs in the fifth century BC. Among the sacrificial offerings were the earliest known wool textiles and twill weaves in the Iberian Peninsula, which represent the most diverse textile collection unearthed in the region providing a first glimpse of the role of textiles in Iberian sacrificial economy.
