Abstract

Anna reads prayers performed by the Baga-Burul clan of the Bolshederbetovskiy ulus. Anna starts her prayer with pleading, ‘Deities and gods, watch after us, who went astray and are ignorant of the truth. Free us from the sufferings of dwelling in this intermediate realm’. Anna utters the prayer three times: ‘We, who go astray and are ignorant of the truth, Let us be protected by deities and gods! I pray to the four guardians of the four corners of the world I pray to the four grandparents I pray to Buddha Shakyamuni and Lama Tsongkapa, I pray to Vajrapani and the Dalai Lama I pray to Buddha Arl I pray to the spirits-protectors of land and water I pray to Okn Tengr, I pray to Maitreya and Bhaisajyaguru, I pray to river Manych! I pray to the beautiful red and yellow sun, I pray to the round moon, Let us live healthy without cough or flu, Let us live without being punished by heavens, I ask for this! Om mani padme khum After the prayer, Anna sings a hymn to the deities-protectors of Bolshederbetovskiy ulus, Green Tara and White Tara. The hymn is sung three times. The next part of the prayer is dedicated to the protectors of Bolshederbetovskiy ulus. It is also read three times: ‘I pray to the four grandparents I pray to the spirits-protectors of land and water I pray to Okn Tengr, I pray to Maitreya and Bhaisajyaguru, I pray to the river Manych! I pray to the beautiful, red and yellow sun, I pray to the round moon, Let us live healthily without cough or flu, Let us live devoid of reasons or conditions that bring unhappiness, Om mani padme khum Then Anna says that people should make food offerings to their ancestors, and give the poor at least a kopeck and a cup of tea. Good thoughts will remove all obstacles on one’s path. Then she utters a well-wish ‘May all plans be fulfilled. Let Buddhas protect you. May others not talk badly about you. May dogs not bark at all! May all Buddhas contribute to your health and well-being. May those who go astray or are ignorant of the truth be looked after by deities and gods. May gods set us free from the sufferings of dwelling in the middle realm!’ At the end of this video, Anna recalls that it was a happy time when there were many old people in Baga-Burul village. All villagers would come to a farewell party for army conscripts, without invitation. Everyone lived in friendship with each other. Weddings continued for four days.
