Torres Cacoullos and Travis's ‘Bilingualism in the Community: Code-switching and Grammars in Contact’ is a comprehensive study of language contact in New Mexico – a well-established bilingual community in the Southwest of the United States of America. Problematising the impact of poor data and disparate standards of proof in investigating contact linguistics, three key contributions of the study are: (i) a mammoth purpose-built corpus of natural spontaneous Spanish–English bilingual speech, (ii) rigorous evaluation metrics, and (iii) systematic analyses that can serve as the basis for cross-fertilisation. The book consists of eleven chapters, the first four providing an introduction to the community, the corpus, the linguistic variables and the methodology that underpins the research findings in subsequent chapters.
