Abstract

Maria says that in her family children born before her died. In the past child mortality was high across Kalmykia. When Maria was 1 month old, her parents took her to their relative who was a monk called Dorzhi. He read prayers, carried out a ritual and gave Maria her name. The ritual was done so that Maria was protected from misfortunes and death.
