Abstract

Tsagan relays a story about a monk called Avga: There were 7 brothers from the Eldzhingud clan who were all highly respected among the population. One of them was a monk called Shar emchi who was a Buddhist doctor and bone setter. He sent his nephew to study Buddhism in Tibet. On his way to Tibet, which lasted for six months, the nephew composed a song about his journey, which today people still sing in Kalmykia. After spending 13 years in Tibet, Avga returned to Kalmykia where he worked at the Tsagan-Nur Temple. From there he was sent to the Cheerya Khurul, which was a philosophical temple. On his way Agva and his companions stopped at a well to water their horses. Soon several local men came to them asking not to water their horses saying that there was not enough water for local people, let alone strangers’ animals. Avgan told all of them to sit under the cart and began to recite special mantras. All of sudden it began to rain.
