Abstract
Narma relays stories that she heard from her parents:One night when Narma’s father was out on the steppe a man approached him calling his name. Realising that it was a ‘dogam’ spirit in a human form, her father threatened the spirit with his dagger at which point it disappeared into the darkness. In 1942 Narma’s mother was working on a collective farm. One of her colleagues, a young girl, was abducted by a ‘dogam’ spirit which had taken the form of a man whom the girl knew. The next morning she was found dead. Once an old man who worked on a cattle farm went missing. He was found strangled by a ‘shulm’ spirit in a barn. Spirits may take human forms and murder people.
