Description

This image is an early modern tour de force, a demonstration of Mellan's technical mastery and ingenuity in handling the burin: the inscription at the bottom of the illusionistic holy cloth claims that Mellan made this plate with a single engraved line ("Formatur unicus una"). Another inscription below, "Non alter" both refers to the impossibility of imitating the artist's image and to Christ's unique nature. In this plate, Mellan's line and his ingenius hand are cleverly paralleled to the works of the divine.
