Description

Engraving of the original "Schlangenstein" (serpent stone), which was erected in 1787 by Martin Gottlieb Klauer on behalf of Herzog Carl August and in honor of Goethe in the Ilm park of Weimar in Thuringia after an ancient roman model. It bears the inscription "Genio huius loci" (To the spirit of this place). The monument shows a serpent coiled around an altar or classical column and biting into the offerings displayed on it.
