Description

This is one from a set of four plates after Hans von Aachen, engraved by the brothers Jan Sadeler I and Raphael Sadeler. Plate representing the maid of Italy recieving 'talents' and ingenium from Apollo, personifying the various arts, which are represented through instruments and symbols scattered on the ground. Among the implements and tools lying in the foreground are: an antique torso, a small oven, books, a croquet mallet and balls, tools, a large ball and an arm-guard ('bracciale' used to play an Italian ball game) in lower left corner; a money pouch, die, theatrical masks, a sword, a cornet, a shawm and books in lower right corner. There are musicians in the right background and an army marching through an archway in the left background.
