Description

Monumental titlepage with heavy iconographical weight for the French translation of the 2nd edtion of the Examen de Ingenios (1594). Published in Amsterdam. We can recognize “Investigation” as Cesare Ripa described from his Iconologia (1624, p.331-332); Behind there is Pegasus, usually associated with poets and “studiosi”, as the same Ripa says when he associates it with the Aurore: Pegasus is linked with “velocità” and, bringing the light of the day, “desta gli spiritu a capricii ingegnosi, et piacevoli”. (Ripa, 1624, p. 61). Behind the foreground in which Investigation or examination is looking at the boy's heart, there is an arcade with an inscription above: Nihil invita Minerva. Nothing against the willing of Minerva, or Nothing shall be done if Minerva is unwilling: the roman saying according to which it is hard to achive a task if one doesn’t have the talent or the capacity to perform it.
