Description
Gabriel Harvey, Smithus, vel Musarum Lachrymae, London: Henry Bynneman, 1578, p. 207 (Smith; or, The tears of the muses). Woodcut of Thomas Smith, Harvey's patron, holding a book. The book is dedicated to Elizabeth I, shortly after Smith's death, with plenty of reference to Smith's character, (see the poem afterwards). The inscription "Ingenium nulla manus" and the book in Smith's hands seem to suggest that ingenium only lives on through erudition and writing.
