Abstract

This article analyses the different forms of punishment applied to convicted offenders in the Turin Judicial Papyrus, with a particular focus on correlations between specific crimes and associated sanctions. The difference between the judicial sanctions of forced suicide and execution is underlined, with attention being drawn also to somewhat less severe punishments such as mutilation, renaming of criminals, and even simple verbal reprimands. Overall, the paper aims to highlight the likelihood that Egyptian judicial punishment could be highly complex, taking into account both the purely physical and the spiritual dimensions of the Egyptian lived experience.
