Abstract

This video is about urtiin duu (long songs) from Jinghe county of Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. Bayardalai sings a number of long songs, explaining that the Torghut long songs in Jinghe county are somewhat different from those in Bayangol and Hobogsair. This, he thinks, is due to the fact there are many Chahar Mongols living among the Torghuts in Bortala; there is much similarity between the Chahar and Torghut long songs in Bortala. He is currently visiting Hohhot, Inner Mongolia where he underwent a surgery. He brought a Torghut long song book with him and often sang long songs in a low voice in hospital. “It is the main psychological support to me while I am here in the Inner Mongolia International Mongolian Hospital,” Bayardalai says. One of his daughters is writing a PhD thesis on Oirat long songs at Xinjiang Normal University, and Bayardalai wants her to inherit his long song heritage in the future.
