Abstract

Dobdontserenchumbul, better known as Senchin, was a prominent Torghut reincarnate lama, and he was Torghut Khan Buyanmünkh’s brother. Senchin lived in his residence which is in Balgantai village adjacent to the Yellow Monastery (Shar Süm). In 1915, after Torghut Khan Buyanmünkh died soon after the birth of his son Manchugjav, Senchin took over the administrative work until his own assassination in 1932. During his incumbency, Senchin made a set of reforms as exhibited in the Residence now, including establishing strategic relations with the wider Mongol world and making internal reforms. By Senchin’s arrangement, Manchugjav married Wu Jinbin, daughter of Gunsannorob, the Harqin prince of Inner Mongolia. He built Shar Süm in Balgantai, constructed the Blue Palace in Hejing for Manchugjav, and built canals from the Kaidag river to around Hejing for irrigation. In the backyard of his residence, one can still see apricot trees, the collapsed watering system and old pieces of equipment. Nowadays, Senchin’s residence is under protection and is considered a national tangible heritage.
