Abstract

Viktoria says that her grandfather was called Gyunze. According to some Kalmyks, this name derives from the word kenz, meaning ‘a late child’. Whatever the etymology, Viktoria’s grandfather Gyunze was born on a day called Ganga-Gyumzge, which is a special day when the concept of sin gets suspended and whoever commits sin can get away with it. Born on such a special day, her grandfather was never afraid of committing sin and often stole cattle and gambled.
