Abstract
Through a close analysis of imagery of tearing, ripping, and splitting, this essay argues for a lively but intricate poetics of unity and fragmentation in Jack and His Stepdame, an understudied fifteenth-century comic poem too easily oversimplified as sensational, childish, and repetitive.
