Abstract
Simon Shaffer on the gun-deck of an eighteenth century British warship describes how it was the largest and most complex factory on earth, taking more than 2000 oak trees to construct and employing hundreds of skilled men. He then describes the search for useful plants and their transportation all over the world by the British, including tea, sugar and rubber.
