Abstract
This video is about Boroldu’s life history. Boroldu, born in Salhit pasture, initially joined the Yellow Monastery in Khar Us as a Buddhist apprentice at the age of eight under the renowned lama Namjil. He stayed in the monastery for about ten years until the Great Leap Forward movement swept through Khar Us, destroying the monastery and driving away all young Buddhist apprentices. Since then, Boroldu worked for communes in Salhit pasture for about ten years, herding various livestock and contributing his labour to communal construction. He rose to the position of head of the Red Mountain production brigade. However, during the Cultural Revolution, he was not only dismissed from his position but also heavily criticised for his ten years of service in Buddhism. After privatisation, he was allocated a small number of livestock and began his life as a herder. Subsequently, he was elected as the representative of the local people’s congress and even served as the Ili prefecture-level representative for about ten years. Hence, this video vividly presents the recent history of Khar Us through the life of a single individual.
