Abstract

This video, Möngön offers a comprehensive exploration of the Torghut Mongolian dress in Hobogsair. With over forty years experience in the field, Möngön expertly connects each part of the dress with traditional songs, proverbs, and cultural nuances, shedding light on aspects such as age, gender, marriage, rituals, style, and ornamentation. Reflecting on her personal history, Möngön recalls her mother’s collection of seven distinct traditional Torghut Mongolian dresses and sewing techniques she taught. However, during the period of the Cultural Revolution these cherished garments were deemed feudalistic objects and forcibly destroyed in front of them by red guards. Additionally, facing the hardship of her husband's untimely passing at the age of 38, Möngön survived through dressmaking for others. Initially sewing dresses using the techniques passed down from her mother, Möngön employed traditional measuring methods with her fingers. Over time, her skills and knowledge became widely recognized, with many locals now familiar with Möngön’s expertise. Today, Möngön not only continues to create exquisite Mongolian dresses but also shares her wisdom with younger generations, imparting her legacy through teaching and participation in various competitions.
