Archaeological Investigations at The Grove, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge

Abstract

In February, 1991, initial research was undertaken to retrieve all the known archaeology from documentary sources for a localized area surrounding Fitzwilliam College in anticipation of construction work. From the results came a strong possibility for extra-mural settlement bordering the approach road to the Roman town (Huntingdon Road) and a chance of finding evidence of early Medieval activity connected with the West Fields arable region. A trial trench evaluation, undertaken later that month, provided evidence only for landscaping operations connected with the early 19th century building of The Grove. Truncated soil horizons from gardening activities prevented any earlier possible occupation evidence to remain in that area.
