Matlab code for "Evaluating the potential to reduce the global demand for virgin plastics, fibres and rubbers"

Change log

Description

The Matlab code is to project the future demand of polymers. Please read "How to run the Matlab code to obtain the results". We have estimated the comprehensive global mass flow of polymers and correlated the stock per capita with GDP per capita to project the future demand of polymers. This involves collating data from disparate sources. We have then used this model to evaluate various interventions, including demand reduction, enhanced mechanical recycling and chemical recycling. There is no single data source providing the complete production, trade and consumption of polymers in each region. However, there is disparate data from different organizations. Therefore, we have collated data from disparate sources and conciliated the global mass flow of polymers in 2019. The main data sources are: the ICIS database on the production of polymers, the Comtrade database on the trade of polymer products, the Food and Agriculture Organization on historical population, the World Bank on historical GDP, the UNCTAD database on the list of polymer products, and the Population Division of the UN on population forecast.
