Abstract

In this video, Möngon reflects on her memories of the Yellow Monastery in Khar Us, which was established by Tsagan Gegen in the nineteenth century and demolished in 1958, after nearly two centuries of service to the Torghuts. The introduction of the commune in 1958 led many affluent and Buddhist figures to resist the policy, with some actively opposing it. Consequently, communist party troops indiscriminately suppressed the dissenters, a notable instance being the Yellow Monastery. Two Tibetan Buddhist lamas stationed at the monastery were used as a pretext to arrest other lamas and to justify the monastery’s destruction. Only a few of the lamas who were imprisoned in 1958 and sent to jails in Tarim have recently returned to Khar Us.
