Drawing. The sky on the left-hand side of the picture contains an indication of cumulus clouds to the left of and behind the lower half of a mountain which rises steeply from the left to centre of the background, falling steadily and somewhat less sharply to the right, with small trees indicated around the middle of that descending ridge. The mountain's lower slopes are wooded all round, rising to meet the ridge trees only on part of the right-hand slope. The top contours of the mountain are rough and craggy, especially to the right, with some indication of sheer vertical faces on the mid and upper slopes. The midground is occupied by a shore or river's edge, with leafy trees indicated along its whole length. Near the left-hand edge, a two-storey building is just visible between the trees, below which in the calm water there is a small canoe-like boat with a seated figure at each end. There is a small single-storey structure with three windows in the right centre. A more substantial, probably three-storey building stands further to the right and somewhat higher between the shoreline and the lower slopes, its ground floor obscured by trees. Its narrower second storey has five windows facing left, its third storey two windows facing left, with two others beneath the gable end facing the viewer. In the centre foreground near the water's edge, a horse is feeding, shown flank-on facing right. A gaucho stands by the horse's head in front of a leafy tree some 6m tall, with smaller leafy trees to its left and right, directly in line with the highest part of the mountain. There are indications of other low rough vegetation sprouting around these trees, and a jumble of small rocks to their left. In the right foreground on gently rising ground, a palm-like tree some 9m tall is surrounded by other low shrubs or small trees much less distinctly depicted. In the left foreground, rocks mark the near shoreline as it approaches the lower left-hand edge and corner of the picture.
