Abstract
James Barke's novel Major Operation (1936) portrays mid-1930s Glasgow. At the centre of the text is an account, polyvocal and exuberant, of a May Day march through the city: Politics, thy name is acrimony. Let's have – music! Sit, Jessica! Let the sound of music creep in our ears. Your name isn't Jessica by any chance? Getting fresh are you? My name's Sarah. Sarah Cannan. Call a flute band music?
