Abstract

Ubush was born in 1986. He is from the Zyungar clan. After finishing an institute in Moscow, Ubush served in the army. Today he works in Moscow. His mother, Ubush says, is half Derbet and half Torghut. His father is Buzava. Ubush’s grandfather on his paternal side lived in Zyungar stanitsa in Zimovnikovskiy rayon. Ubush’s grandmother on his paternal side is from Bogshrakhna stanitsa. Mazan Baatr was Ubush’s grandmother’s distant relative. During World War Two Germans first arrived at the former Cossack stanitsas. The locals did not know which side they should take. Ubush’s great-grandfather on his maternal side, Egor Basanov, fought in the Red army and was awarded the St George’s cross. His family was sent into exile in the autumn of 1944 when his daughter, Ubush’s grandmother, was either 13 or 14. Upon seeing the St George’s cross on his chest, the Soviet soldiers who had come to deport them gave the family time to prepare food and warm clothes for the trip. The family was transported on American tracks under the surveillance of a Georgian battalion. Ubush’s great-grandfather on his paternal side fought in the White army, in the Zyungar regiment which mainly consisted of Kalmyks. Many soldiers from this regiment ended up in Turkey, including Ubush’s great-grandfather. Later he returned from Turkey to the Soviet Union and built a mill. His family lived well. Then Ubush’s great-grandfather had been accused of being a kulak. The mill still stands in Rostov oblast.
