Abstract
This special issue celebrates the 80th birthday of Alan Needleman, currently a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSEN) at Texas A&M University (TAMU) and a luminary in the field of mechanics of materials. Alan's enduring contributions have consistently pushed the boundaries of the discipline, inspiring peers and the next generation with his passion and energy. While Alan's towering influence needs no introduction – extensively documented in the guest editorials for his 60th (Hutchinson and Triantafyllidis, 2008) and 70th (Benzerga et al., 2015) birthday special issues – we now turn our attention to the remarkable trajectory of his career after turning 70. It is this enduring vitality and creative spirit that confirm Alan as the “Peter Pan of Mechanics.”
