Abstract

It was an overcast Christmas. The rain had started on the 23rd, and it continued on the 24th. The sun would not come out until the 26th, and even then only for half an hour. That was the day when the snow finally began to fall. It was the third Christmas without father. Gábor Fehér sr. had died from typhus in December 1941, a month after his return from the Eastern front. His wife, Margit Popovits, and his son, Gábor Fehér Jr., would celebrate Christmas on their own in the rural, middling town of Nyíregyháza on the Great Hungarian Plain.
