This is one of a series of seven plates. After a lost series of paintings by Floris for the villa of merchant and art-collector Nicolaas Jongelinck, in Markgravelei, just outside of Antwerp. Arithmetic, is represented as a woman wiring on a blank tablet accompanied by an elderly woman and two male scholars; the elderly woman stands over her and instructs her; her dress is numbered "1234..." and two tomes are labelled "Abraham" and "Pythagors".
