Vladimir talks about the qualities of a good man. He relays two sayings: (1) ‘Be of help to a good man, be an enemy to a bad man’ and (2) ‘A good man praises his horse, a bad man praises his wife’. In the past, Kalmyks were good at stealing livestock. During a theft Kalmyks observed the behaviour of the horses they rode. If the horse snorted, this meant that the thieves were being chased. If the horse yawned, no one pursued. Vladimir concludes by saying that good men talk about what they saw or heard, and not what they ate.
