Honggor Ölöngin Oboo

Abstract

This video focuses on the Oboo (stone cairn) worship in Hobogsair, particularly the Böörs Sum community. The Hongor Ölön Oboo holds profound significance and is worshipped annually on 15 April, preceding other Oboo rituals in Hobogsair. Thus, Böörs Sum holds a prestigious status as the head Sum due to its association with this revered Oboo. The Oboo is believed to be inhabited by a deity associated with camels, and is worshipped with camel products, reflecting the community’s reliance on these animals for sustenance. Adjacent to the Hongor Ölöngiin Oboo stands a distinctive rock formation resembling a bridge, which holds significant spiritual meaning for the Torghuts. According to tradition, this rock is considered a sacred bridge, symbolising the passage of livestock as they migrate to summer pastures. The symbolism extends to the belief that livestock will be protected from disease throughout the year, reinforcing the Torghuts’ spiritual connection to their animals and the natural world.
