Afterword: Sir William Sanderson and copying for ‘private practice’

Abstract

In 1658, the minor Royalist historian Sir William Sanderson published Graphice. The use of the pen and pensil. Or, the most excellent art of painting: in two parts (fig. 1). It is an undistinguished book, notable chiefly for the fact that it is an early account of the visual arts written in English, which perforce treats of the relationship between words and images. It is also, by and large, a copy.
